(submitted by Lynna Farnan) Zeta Epsilon was chartered June 11, 1955. Though none of our charter members are still active, and many are deceased. We know that the chartering chapter president was Fern Barnhouse. Though not a charter member, each year we honor one special member who joined ESA in Manhattan and then became Zeta Epsilon’s 2nd Chapter president, Guila Monk. We have named our philanthropic award in her memory.Guila Monk was a very active member and become chapter president. When she was installed, she told the chapter that while she was President you would be expected to work hard. If you didn’t want to work, then you shouldn’t be in this chapter. She was a very creative individual and could make stunning decorations out of recycled items. She could also make dinners out of almost anything. One member recalled a dinner that Guila hosted. She dug into the bottom of her freezer and pulled out several different types of meat that she didn’t know she had and made an excellent dinner of mismatched foods. Guila lost her fight to cancer but has not been forgotten. Our present membership is 23 members. We have 1 pledge, 2 transfers and 1 reinstatement this year(2015-2016). We have 4 Past State Presidents and 3 of them are still active on the State, Regional, and IC levels. Ten of our members are serving on the Kansas State Council this year. We stay involved in our local community as well as in State, District and International activities. Some of our local projects currently include: Central Elementary School one of the lower income schools in the Olathe school district; Center of Grace which provides free meals weekly to those in need; PAWZ an organization providing assistance for the pets of needy people in Wyandotte county; Veterans Helping Heroes; and all of the state and international projects _____________________________________________ Zeta Phi was chartered in June 11, 1955 with over 8 members and Gamma Phi was their sponsor chapter. Over the years, they have raised money by having yard sales, dinners, fashion shows, card party luncheons, running concessions, selling raffle tickets for various items, etc. Their charities have included Heartspring, St Judes Childrens Research Hospita, Special Olympics, Valley Vista (and other nursing home), running the MDA telehon in Junction City, Geary County Open Door, Blood Mbile, Goodwill Easter Seals, JC Sheriff and Police Depts., Geary County Food Bank, KS Vietnam POW/MIA project and various local school projects. Zeta Epsilon has celebrated 55 years in ESA. Gulia Monk was a very active member and become chapter president. Four members of Zeta Epsilon have been state presidents. Three of these state presidents are still current members. Pat Josey, Linda Schmidt and Shelah Goyer In 2011-2012 they had three new members join ESA (Pam Mitchell, Diane Goold and Teri Blodizsar). They had a Tacky Party in January. Everyone came dressed in their tackiest garb and brought tacky snacks. They even had a tacky gift exchange. Zeta Epsilon is also celebrating 55 years of service to ESA.
