Eta Rho - Derby
|
ETA RHO has celebrated 50 years in ESA. The greatest thing to come out of 1960 was an Epsilon Sigma Alpha Chapter in Derby, Kansas. In June of 1960 Eta Rho was born through the hard work of Winnie Knowles, Rita Jones, Margaret Nelson, Marian Bradley, Juanita Scott, Lois Mayal, and Roberta Saunders.
Winnie Knowles became the first president of Eta Rho. At one point the chapter had up to 12 members and their focus was the Institute of Logopedics in Wichita, Kansas. Throughout the years the members added philanthropic projects that have touched their hearts. Some of these projects included St.Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Adopt a Child & Heartsprings, needy families through Salvation Army, Guadalupe Clinic, Birthline, Operation Holiday and local nursing homes.
Eta Rho was always in the local paper for some project, social or event that was going on; from cow Pattie bingo to telethons and radiothons to duck races on the Arkansas River. They were adventurous, dedicated, and creative when it came to their Ways and Means undertaking.
Let’s not forget about the pledges and socials. Pledges were never safe as they might have been awoken for a 6:00 am come as you are breakfast or a wear your clothes backwards party. Eta Rho socials were never boring as old fashion slumber parties, ice cream socials, preferential teas, Polaroid parties, casino nights and holiday events were always sure to be a good time with lots of fun and laughter.
Eta Rho wasn’t just a force in the local community, they made their mark at the District, State and IC level of ESA as well. Over the years there have been many skits, committees, and first place awards.
It has been 50 years, member have come and gone, but what always remains the same is the sisterhood that is faithful, loyal, and true. Touching and enriching lives, not just in the chapter, but in the community as well. It will be exciting to see what the next 50 years of Eta Rho will bring.
In 2011-2012 they made a wreath for the Festival of Trees silent auction, donated items to Heartspring and Goodwill, donated personal care packets to those in need.
